OUR VISION FOR RED BANK

OUR VISION FOR THE RED BANK IS TO CREATE AN INCLUSIVE, SUSTAINABLE URBAN NEIGHBOURHOOD.

A neighbourhood that’s home to a diverse mix of people, including residents across all age groups and a mix of local and independent businesses.

A low carbon neighbourhood, targeting Net Zero Carbon in operation, that delivers development in a sustainable way and reinvigorates the green spaces along the river valley.

A connected neighbourhood, where all key local amenities and facilities are within a 15-minute walk, with safe routes for walking, cycling and running.

A neighbourhood with a strong connection to nature, with access to the river’s edge, woodland, and places to sit, relax and play.

WORKING WITH THE NATURAL ASSETS AT RED BANK

At the heart of our thinking about Red Bank is the River Irk and its valley.

Once a hive of activity within an industrialised landscape of weirs and mills, we now see the opportunity to put the re-naturalised River Irk at the heart of our new sustainable urban neighbourhood.

Naturalising rivers and canals can improve urban ecology. If we can improve urban ecology, we can provide a healthier urban environment for people to live and work in.

Red Bank has a unique topography which marks it out from Manchester’s otherwise flat landscape – providing views over the city, and an incredible setting in which to live and visit.

Introducing Wild Urbanism

The role the River Valley can play in the neighbourhood gave us our design ethos for Red Bank: we’re calling it Wild Urbanism.

Wild Urbanism is our vision to connect the transforming built environment with the urban nature of the River Irk Valley, to create a unique city neighbourhood.

By bringing nature into the city along the Irk Valley, and bringing the city out to this emerging area, Red Bank has huge potential to champion the benefits of both, and to reconnect Manchester to its lost rivers and landscape.
